Moving Image Education The Story in Cardinal Newman High School for 2009/2010.

Starting Points.

MIE was introduced to the school after Patrick Mooney was involved in the Scottish Sponsored modules on MIE at Glasgow. Introduced to the English classroom the work was commended by HMIe in the recent report. Resourced by the Head Teacher and the QIO for North Lanarkshire the work gained recognition at the recent Scottish Teaching Awards. It was felt however that a more cohesive approach to MIE was required. In the school improvement plan the Head Teacher along with the English Department set out ways in which MIE and the Digital Technologies involved could permeate the Learning and Teaching of the school. Thus it was decided that the English Department would aim to roll out MIE across the entire First Year cohort.

Aims

Much work has been done on MIE. On the whole it appears that this approach to learning is one that places the student at the centre of the learning process. By empowering the learner it acts as a motivational tool and impacts on their life-long learning skills. It also allows the students to be freed from the anxieties of failure that often exist within the traditional curriculum thus encouraging risk taking and creative approaches.

It was hoped then that MIE would play an important part in developing the four capacities of ACE; setting students on the path to becoming Successful Learners; Confident Individuals; Effective Contributors and Responsible Citizens.
