Screening Shorts is an impressive and exciting new moving image resource available through Glow. It collects many of the brilliant short films from the classic BFI Starting Stories, Story Shorts and Screening Shorts and makes them available to download and watch for those with a Glow username and password. And the best bit? It's free!
There are currently about 30 films on the site ready for download and every month a new batch will be added. The films are a mixture of fiction, documentary, live action and animation. The films comprehensively cover the 3-18 age range but some films won't be suitable for younger viewers so it is best advised to watch them yourself first before using them in the classroom. The films can be found in the 'Films for your classroom' section accompanied by a printable set of classroom activities for questions, watching, analysing and being creative. You can choose to view the films by downloading them or streaming them from the website.
Screening Shorts is the perfect place to start if you are looking for ways to explore your 35 hours of CPD this year! 'Teacher Activities' is a fool proof manual that clearly explains the purpose and methodology behind Moving Image Ecucation. There is also a comprehensive 'Tutorials' page with video tutorials explaining the different teaching strategies, individual tutorials to compliment each film (this will also be added to and expanded each month) and a series of films showing Moving Image Education in action in different primary and secondary schools across Scotland.
Through Glow you will also have the licence to reappropriate the films; cutting and editing them to create a teacher tutorial or allowing students to re-edit them and change key elements like the soundtrack or sequencing.
If you have never seen any of these films before then I suggest you start by watching great animations like Lucky Dip, Baboon on the Moon and The Sandman.
