Recording sound for filming is a specialist area so only a few places will really be able to help you.

A musicians' shop, which supplies mics for bands, will do their best, but you might end up with something unsuitable. On the internet be careful you are not looking at microphones for computers or karaoke. If you find camcorder microphones they may be cheap, but then not work with your camera. And they can be difficult to use with extension cables, attach to a pole or use outdoors. If you're dealing with a company over the internet try to discuss your needs with them on the phone.

None of the high street stores such as Currys or Dixons currently supply suitable mics. If you have a specialist HiFi shop they might be able to get what you need, and they can probably advise you.

We suggest some specialist suppliers and you can also try the internet if you're sure you know what you want.

Have the name and model number of your camera to hand when calling

Two of the best companies to try are The Warehouse & Canford Audio, both have many years of experience supplying sound equipment for the film and video industry. They are approachable, will understand your requirements and help you to find the best gear for your budget: they will be able to help you best if your budget is from £350-£500.

Wherever you go, don't forget to take the camera with you.
